Goldfinch Blankets

We started Goldfinch in 2013 because we love beauty, textiles and old-fashioned hand processes. We travelled to find sources in Nepal and Mexico--places where making things by hand is still a way of life--and found amazing artisans who still dye, weave, embroider and sew by the old, un-mechanized, time-consuming methods. To be sure, we were awed to realize this wealth of knowledge, history and skill was alive and well. Most of our designs are inspired by the old traditional patterns, textures and techniques, which we then simplify and update for contemporary use.

Our studio is in Minneapolis, where we design and correspond daily with our partners in Nepal and Mexico. Producing our collection is at once thrilling, creative, satisfying, fun and quite impractical. We love it all!

Debra Herdman Debra is an interior and furnishings designer, www.debraherdmandesign.com. Her career has spanned interior design, fashion design, art direction and product design. She's always made things by hand and at age 11 started sewing clothes for herself, friends, relatives and rock bands. From there she experimented with knitting, macrame, tie-dye, block printing, embroidery and painting on fabric. She utilized many of these skills when she founded her first textile company, modern linen industrie--a collection hand-made by her and local artisans in Minneapolis.  Debra likes to remodel houses, build gardens and travel. She's inspired by other cultures, travels to Nepal each year to work with the Goldfinch makers and is currently learning to speak Spanish.
